Thaipusam is a festival originating in the state of Tamil Nadu, India, and is celebrated in January or February in several regions with a Tamil population, such as Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka. Hundreds of pilgrims pierce their mouths, tongues, arms, chests or backs with sharp needles or hooks from which they hang their offerings, which usually consist of fruit or containers of milk. For reasons of health, safety and ease of access, we choose the Kuala Lumpur holiday for you.
The most impressive part of the festival is the self-flagellation part, in which the most devout participants pierce their cheeks and tongues with small iron rods and stick hooks into their bodies (with which they even pull carts) with no apparent pain and hardly any bleeding. In addition to these piercings, they also wear iron structures with figures or symbols of gods on them (called Kavadi), which weigh dozens of kilograms and are stuck into their bodies. With their faces half pierced and the heavy Kavadi nailed to their bodies, they dance and even jump until they reach their destination, the Batu Cave, 15 km from Kuala Lumpur, a journey they make in 8 hours. Once they arrive, they have to climb the 272 steps leading into the cave. Each Kavadi bearer has a group of helpers who follow him, cheer him on and dance by his side. They say they feel no pain thanks to the trance-like state they are in after the preparation the participants must go through, 2 days of fasting, meditating and praying before starting the ceremony.
