Oradour-sur-Glane

This village was destroyed on 10 June 1944, when 643 of its inhabitants, including women and children, were massacred by a company of troops belonging to the 2nd SS Das Reich Division, a Waffen-SS unit of Nazi Germany’s military forces. Heinz Barth, an SS officer and Nazi war criminal, was responsible for this massacre. 19 of the victims were Spanish exiles fleeing the recent civil war. After the war a new village was built nearby, but by order of the then French president Charles de Gaulle, the original has been kept as a permanent memorial. The Centre de la mémoire d’Oradour museum is located next to the historic site.
