Palermo, Italy. The convent of the Capuchins in Palermo is famous throughout the world for the presence of an enormous cemetery in its cellars. These were excavated in the 16th century and form a large rectangular-shaped cemetery. The corpses present have never been counted, but are thought to number around 8000. The mummies, lying or standing, dressed in well-kept clothes, are divided according to sex and social class. Most belong to the upper classes, as mummification was a costly procedure. In the various sections one can recognise prelates, merchants and bourgeoisie in Sunday clothes, army officers in dress uniform, young virgins, missing before they could marry and wearing their wedding dress, family groups standing on high shelves, separated by thin balcony-like railings, and children.
