You will be familiar with the Kiyotaki tunnel. Here, there have been decades of reports of paranormal activity. It has become of great interest to ghost hunters and those fascinated with phantasmogenesis. Many unexplained things have happened in the tunnel, including ghosts travelling in the back seats of cars. Other places of interest today include: The Bloody Pond of Empress Saga . Behind Emperor Saga’s mausoleum is a pond. The water is said to be red because it is the place where the samurai’s head fell in after he was beheaded, the water never returned to its original colour. Adashino Nenbutsu – ji Temple: One of the most unique temples in the city, we will see the bamboo forest while going to a mass burial site. There are over 8,000 monuments marking the deceased, each grave is accompanied by a Buddha head. This is an unusual place located on a hill overlooking the city. Cold Mountain (death and dread) : the coldest, and possibly the creepiest place in Japan, this hill apparently has the most malevolent spirits of any forest. It’s where an emperor died, as well as an elite army, and it’s a place that sees very few visitors these days.
There seems to be a significant drop in temperature as we take our first step into the forest, so we leave this place as an optional effort for the first part of this tour. Continuation to today’s second part: Akabashi Tunnel and Ochiai Bridge: Ochiai Bridge and Akabashi Tunnel have a dark reputation for suicides and mysterious sightings. The bridge connects the northern part of the tunnel to the opposite valley and the steep drop into the shallow river is said to be a commonly used means of suicide. The area is also known for mysterious disappearances of locals. Locals have claimed to see dark figures wandering or standing on either side of the tunnel entrances that disappear when approached. To add to this, the area is said to be used for sky burials (a Tibetan burial practice in which corpses are left on top of mountains for wildlife and nature to sustain them) despite being illegal in Japan. Sagano Haunted Mansion: Since the caretaker jumped to his death after the eighth story or this 40 year old building, it is said that there has been paranormal activity ever since. Sagano-Nomiya Railway Crossing : Ever since a grief-stricken student jumped to his death in front of the train here, it has been said that couples passing by here at night separate or divorce. The scene here at night is particularly chilling.
